Our Persona, Yumi and her needs
Our persona Yumi, and her “needs” regarding pictures
Problem: Up to the time when project Yumi was conceived, AOL Pictures and AOL Public Galleries were two separate pictures products that were integrated in ways that were not completely ideal. The second iLab project, project Yumi, was an attempt to redefine AOL Pictures based on what users might want in today’s world of public photo sharing, but still keeping in mind safety and security for those that share photos more traditionally online.

Solution: For the first iLab project, Mgnet, four designers were assigned to establish a concept in a 3-month timeframe. Project Yumi was much more aggressive. We would carry out the iLab process and create our concept for Yumi in one month with a team of 20+ cross-functional backgrounds. In the end, we completed a concept that would encompass all the needs of our persona, Yumi, who was representative of anthropological research conducted by every team member.

My Contributions: I conducted anthropological research and documented this research for my team to compile and present. Out of our research came hundreds of concept ideas that we brainstormed together. We represented every idea as a cartoon sketch, and also brainstormed our persona, Yumi, from these.

Ultimately, we brainstormed a final concept, and the design team began to flesh out ideas from the concept as wireframes. My wireframes were centered around a new AOL Pictures Welcome page, explorations of 3 different ways to present the new “photostream”/gallery, a new Set Home Page, a profile page, and explorations around actions that a user might take when they have just finished viewing a slideshow.
